Hiring Challenges for Startups

Startups are business units, who have only recently ventured into business activities. For most startups, the initial capital comes from their founder’s savings. If startups wish to succeed, they need to perform well in their core functions. To achieve this goal, it becomes necessary to attract the best talent.

What hiring challenges do startups face?

The hiring environment is highly competitive. All firms are striving to tap on the best human resources. There are established business units, who are struggling. Therefore, there is no surprise that startups are facing hiring challenges too.

What hiring challenges do startups face?

  • A Less Known Unit:

Candidates are often keen on joining organizations that hold a certain name and reputation in the market. However, since startups are new in the industry, there are bleak chances that anyone might know about their existence. Hence, if time comes to choose between a branded unit and a startup, most candidates would choose the former over latter.

  • Limited Helping Hands:

In case of startups, there are fewer members working on the team. Thus, they have no option, but to wear multiple hats. Internal team members become solely responsible to advertise the job, carry out the screening, conduct interviews, and eventually assist with selection and onboarding. This may act as a hurdle in the sense that not many candidates may know about the openings, or there might not be enough hands to interact with every applicant.

  • Tight Finances:

Startups find it difficult to promote job openings through popular channels mainly because of a tight financial budget. Likewise, even if they are able to attract the best talent, it becomes difficult for them to offer lucrative packages to such candidates. This may act as a turn off for few candidates, who would then end up choosing a big, known firm over a humble startup.

However, in the near future the scenario is expected to change. With startups being able to capture the market, and leave a mark for themselves in the industry, the hiring challenges are likely to ease out.

Until then, it is important for startups to remain patient and do whatever best they can to hire the best people.
